Biography

Mgr. Rutherford Cardinal Johnson-Etruria-di Daniell is a priest, author, and scientist. In the Church, he serves as Patriarch of Saint Stephen, Old Holy Roman Church of the English Rite (Anglican Rite Roman Catholic Church). This Old Roman Catholic Patriarchate in the Anglican tradition descends from the See of Utrecht, which was granted independence by the Holy See in 1145. The Cardinal was born in the Southern United States and confirmed in the Roman Communion. Mgr. Rutherford possesses a diverse, multi-disciplinary education, which is reflected in his writings and academic research. He is a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology (BS in Applied Physics and MS in Economics), the University of Kentucky (PhD in Agricultural Economics), and Pontifical Georgian College (Licentiate in Canon Law and Licentiate and Doctorate in Sacred Theology). Mgr. Rutherford is an economics professor and has previously served as a university chaplain. He is also Regent and Professor of Liturgy and Economics at Pontifical Georgian College, the Patriarchal See's principal seminary.

An Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, the Cardinal remains active in service and philanthropy, supporting various charitable outreach programs and apostolates. His avocational interests include music, high altitude mountaineering, equestrian, and sailing. In recognition of his field research, he was made a member of the Explorers Club in New York and has also been honored by the Governors of Kentucky, Alabama, and Texas for his leadership and service. He served as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and participated in the Global War on Terrorism. Being of Anglo-Norman and Franco-Italian descent, Mgr. Rutherford's own heritage parallels the Roman and English ecclesiastical heritage of the Church he shepherds. In addition to English, the Cardinal speaks his ancestral languages of Italian and French, as well as Spanish, German, and Latin.
